I’ll Take a Dozen of Those, Please.
After initially planning to once again try their luck at the Lanier National Speedway, the looming chance of rain prompted the team to stay a little closer to home and travel instead to the Watermelon Capital Speedway for the official season opener for the Cordele, Georgia track. Even if it rained in Cordele, a three hour drive is better than making the five hour drive to Lanier for the same results. The skies cooperated in both places, however, and everyone got to race. Andrew and the team would like to congratulate Clay Hair on his Master’s Division victory at Lanier. Go CHM! The crowd and the competitors were somewhat sparse for the event at WCS, no doubt a result of the threatening skies during the day. By sunset though, the skies had cleared and it looked to be a perfect night for racing. Andrew, representing the southern Georgia arm of Clay Hair Motorsports, found out when he registered and drew for a starting spot that he would have to start at the rear since this was his first trip back to the track after his last win. This came as somewhat of a surprise, but wasn’t seen as too much of an obstacle. By the end of the six lap heat race, Andrew had worked his way from the rear of the field to the front of the pack to take the win in the preliminary event. Starting the 20-lap main event from the inside of the last row, opposite last week’s winner, Andrew quickly started his march toward the front of the ten car field. By the time lap two rolled around, Andrew had grabbed the second spot. Shortly thereafter, he would grab the lead and never let go. The competition had several shots at Andrew due to a rash of cautions in the event, but the white #62 was just too much to handle on this night and Andrew drove to his twelfth consecutive victory at the Watermelon Capital Speedway.
After the race, Andrew commented, “The track was real slick
tonight. I almost hit the wall a couple of times coming out of four.”
He continued by saying, “The car started out pretty good, but
then went away a little during the middle of the race. But there at
the end, it came back and started hooking up pretty good.” Andrew
and the team plan – once again – to travel to the Lanier
National Speedway on May 10 to try out the competition at the north
Georgia track. Stay tuned to www.andrewsmithracing.com for schedule
